Real-Time Elastography in the Assessment of Advanced Fibrosis in Chronic Hepatitis C: Is It Here to Stay?

چکیده
l l i i h n a w s e iver fibrosis is, undoubtedly, one of the main prognostic facors in liver disease because it determines the development f cirrhosis and its subsequent complications.1 Classically, liver biopsy has been considered the old-standard for liver fibrosis assessment.2 There are limtations associated to liver biopsy, namely sampling bias, bserver variability among pathologists and potentially lifehreatening complications.3 Moreover, information provided y histological evaluation of the liver tissue obtained at iopsy is static, incapable of transmitting dynamic or funcional regarding liver disease. A number of non-invasive diagnostic tools for liver fibrosis valuation have emerged in the last decade, and are generlly defined as serological or mechanical. The most studied lood marker based indices include FibroTest, Fibrosis-4 ndex, Forns Score, aspartate-to-platelet-ratio APRI score nd ELF score. Among mechanical methods are transient lastography (TE), MR elastography, acoustic radiation force mpulse (ARFI), shear wave elastography (SWE) and realime elastography (RTE).4 Real-time elastography is an imaging method that uses onventional ultrasound (US) probes to detect the physical

Diagnostic Usefulness of Real-Time Elastography for Liver Fibrosis in Chronic Viral Hepatitis B and C
The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic usefulness of real-time elastography (RTE) for liver fibrosis in chronic viral hepatitis B (CHB) and C (CHC). Fifty-one and thirty-two of the patients were diagnosed with CHB and CHC, respectively. Enrolled patients underwent liver biopsy and RTE. The FIB-4 index and aspartate transaminase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) were also measured....
متن کاملReal-time elastography as a noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C Egyptian patients: a prospective study
BACKGROUND Hepatitis C virus is a worldwide problem. Noninvasive methods for liver fibrosis assessment as ultrasound-based approaches have emerged to replace liver biopsy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of real-time elastography (RTE) in the assessment of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC), compared with transient elastography and liver biop...
متن کاملبررسی عوامل مرتبط با شدت فیبروز کبد در بیماران مبتلا به هپاتیتهای مزمن B و C
Background & Aim: Viral hepatitis has existed since the creation of human. The estimated prevalence of hepatitis is about 3-5%. For patients with chronic hepatitis C and moderate to severe liver fibrosis, antiviral therapy is strongly suggested, while the cases without fibrosis or with mild liver fibrosis are often followed up without receiving antiviral therapy. The purpose of the present s...
متن کاملAssessing the consistency of liver fibrosis results obtained through biopsy and transient elastography in patients suffering from chronic hepatitis C
Until recently, core-needle liver biopsy was used as the gold standard in chronic hepatitis C diagnostics. Information on the inflammatory activity grade and the staging of liver fibrosis or steatosis, obtained through biopsy, constituted an indispensable element in the process of determining patients' eligibility for antiviral treatment. The histological profile of the samples examined was dec...
متن کاملAssessment of transient elastography (FibroScan) for diagnosis of fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Transient elastography (TE) is a new modality for the diagnosis of liver fibrosis caused by various etiologies. This study was conducted to determine the accuracy of TE in detecting the different stages of liver fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. Methods: MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Cochrane Library, American College of Physicians (ACP) Journal Club...
